HKU MED - The Collection of 31 Deans' Commissioned Portraits by Brendan Fitzpatrick

A small report from the unveiling of the portraits Brendan has painted for Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. Thirty-one deans in chronological order, starting with its founder, Sir Patrick Manson, and concluding with Professor Gabriel Leung.
“I am honoured to have had the opportunity to study each of these esteemed characters, visualizing the rich historical tapestry of the faculty for generations to come. From the inaugural class of only a handful of students including young Sun Yat-Sen himself, to the veritable institution it is now, I am proud to have contributed to the historical records of one of the finest medical schools in the world.”

Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition 2020 by Brendan Fitzpatrick

I’m very pleased to announce that I’ve been admitted into the Royal Society of Portrait Painter’s annual show for 2020 with my piece “Everything’s Fine: Self Portrait in Sharp Relief”

Although the ongoing pandemic has affected the usual way that the show is displayed, you can find the show online here:

I’m very proud to be exhibited alongside some great artists who I respect and admire and I hope we have the chance to reschedule the show sometime in the future for everyone to have at it in person.

Portrait Award at the 137th Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition by Brendan Fitzpatrick

I am thrilled to belatedly announce on my blog that I was awarded the prize for best portrait at the 137th Annual Royal Ulster Academy exhibition for my painting of Eoghan.

My portrait of Eoghan is an ode to my Irish friend, a musician and humble creative residing in Florence. I’m delighted that I now get to share his soul searching stare with a wider audience, and I already miss bumping into him with his puppy Oscar while writing this.

My painting is being proudly displayed in the Royal Ulster Museum in Belfast from the 19th of October 2018 - 6th of January 2019.

Renovations Complete! by Brendan Fitzpatrick

Going up!

Going up!

After an uphill battle of logistics, I have finally managed to complete my studio renovations up to sight-size painting standards.

Though the studio was beautiful in white, a mid-grey tone is needed in portraiture to cut down the reflected light. Though I know that there are many schools of thought as to what hue and tone are needed in a studio, I was inclined to replicate the studio conditions afforded to me by Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence. Many a debate was had with other painters over the colours they had used and the feedback that was generated from it.

To enhance the shadows and flatter the skin tone, I chose to work with Little Greene's 'Lead' colour emulsion recommended to me by fellow artist and friend Harriet Pattinson.

I couldn't have done this without Mick from Chelsea Green Decorators. He saved the day with a last minute booking and did an incredible job in the studio. I couldn't recommend him and his son more highly. They even helped hang the heavy frames on my five-metre tall walls.

As such, the studio is now open for business and I will resume taking clients in for the new year.

Exhibition at the Landsdowne Club by Brendan Fitzpatrick

Earlier in October, I had the pleasure of being included in a private exhibition at the Landsdowne Club in Mayfair, London. I managed to sneak both Amelia and Gloria into the show as my '+2s' and I'd like to thank them for their ever long support and cheer!

I'd also like to thank Lucy Mannering at the club for ironing out the logistics for this event, and to my friend Hannah for saving the day with a van!
